Choose the right test
IELTS Academic vs General Training
The two variants share Listening and Speaking. Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, so the right preparation path depends on the test named by the organisation or immigration program receiving your result.
IELTS Academic
Academic is commonly requested for university or other higher-education study and for some professional registration routes. Its Reading texts are academic in style. Writing Task 1 asks you to describe and compare visual information such as a chart, table, process, or diagram.
IELTS General Training
General Training is commonly used for migration, work, training, or study below degree level. Its Reading material moves through everyday, workplace, and general-interest contexts. Writing Task 1 is a letter responding to a practical situation.
What stays the same
- Listening: both variants use the same Listening test and its mix of social and educational or academic contexts.
- Speaking: both use the same three-part examiner-led interview format.
- Writing Task 2: both require an essay response, although the surrounding purpose for taking the test may differ.
- Band scale: both report performance on the 0-to-9 band scale.
Do not choose from the name alone
“Academic” does not automatically mean better, and “General Training” is not accepted for every migration or workplace route. Check the exact test name, delivery requirements, and minimum skill bands with the receiving institution, regulator, employer, or immigration program before booking.
