What is the CELPIP test?

CELPIP is an English language test used in Canada for immigration, citizenship, and professional purposes. It is delivered entirely on a computer and reports a separate level for each skill it measures. If you are starting from zero, this page explains what the test is, which version applies to you, and where to go next.

What CELPIP is used for

Most people take CELPIP for one of three reasons: a permanent-residence application (where language scores contribute points), a citizenship application (which has a much lower language requirement), or a professional or regulatory body that asks for proof of English ability. Which version you take, and the level you need, depends entirely on which of those applies to you.

  • Permanent residence / Express Entry: the full four-skill CELPIP-General.
  • Canadian citizenship: CELPIP-General LS (Listening and Speaking) is enough.
  • Professional or licensing requirements: check the level the body asks for.

How the test is structured

CELPIP-General measures Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking in under 3 hours, in a single sitting with no separate speaking session. You type your written responses and record your spoken responses into a microphone, so there is no separate interview appointment to schedule.

How CELPIP is scored

CELPIP reports each skill separately: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking each receive their own CELPIP Level from 0 to 12. Your score report also includes an Average Score, but it does not correspond to a CLB level and IRCC does not use it for immigration or citizenship purposes. There is no pass or fail. Programs usually set a minimum for every skill, so your weakest skill is normally the one that decides whether you qualify.

Where to start preparing

Before building a study plan, find out where you actually stand. A single realistic attempt in each skill tells you more than reading about the test, because it shows you which skill is furthest from the level your application needs. From there you can spend your preparation time on the skill that is actually gating you.

Is there a pass or fail on CELPIP?

No. Each skill receives its own CELPIP Level, and the level you need depends on the program you are applying to rather than on any pass mark set by the test itself. Official CELPIP results information

Which CELPIP test should I take?

Take the full CELPIP-General if you need four skills — most commonly for permanent residence or Express Entry. Take CELPIP-General LS if you only need proof for Canadian citizenship, which assesses listening and speaking only.

How is CELPIP different from IELTS?

Both are accepted for Canadian immigration. CELPIP is computer-delivered throughout, including Speaking, and uses Canadian English contexts. Which one suits you depends on how you prefer to be tested and what your program accepts.
