CELPIP vs IELTS

CELPIP vs IELTS: compare the test experience before you choose

CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training are both accepted English tests for Express Entry. The better fit depends on how you prefer to read, write, listen, and speak, where you plan to use the result, and which delivery options are available near you.

Enter each skill separately. IRCC uses different IELTS thresholds for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, so an overall IELTS band is not enough for this conversion.

01

Start with the delivery experience

CELPIP is completed on a computer from start to finish. IELTS delivery is changing and local options vary, so some test takers may have computer, paper, or handwriting choices depending on market. Check the official booking site in your location before deciding. If typing and screen-based navigation match your normal workflow, CELPIP may feel familiar; if a locally available IELTS option better matches how you work, that is a valid reason to choose it.

02

Compare how you answer Reading and Listening

CELPIP Reading and Listening use selection-based multiple-choice responses. IELTS uses a wider mix that can include multiple choice, matching, completion, labelling, and short written answers. This is a format difference, not a statement about required English ability.

  • CELPIP avoids typed short answers in Reading and Listening.
  • IELTS may suit people who prefer varied response formats.
  • Use official samples from both providers before booking.

03

Choose the Speaking and Writing setting that suits you

CELPIP Speaking responses are recorded to a computer, while IELTS Speaking is a live interview with an examiner. CELPIP Writing includes spell-check in its computer interface; spelling accuracy still matters in both tests. Some people prefer recording without a live interlocutor, while others communicate more naturally in a conversation with an examiner.

04

Treat cost and turnaround as current booking details

CELPIP is generally lower-cost for many Canada-focused bookings and generally returns results faster than traditional paper-delivered IELTS. IELTS computer results can be as fast or faster, and fees and timelines vary by location, delivery mode, and optional services. Do not choose from an old price or result-time comparison: confirm the current fee and published turnaround on the official CELPIP and IELTS sites.

05

Match the test to where you will use the result

For Express Entry, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training, and evaluates the four abilities separately against CLB. IELTS also has broad international and academic recognition, which can matter if you plan to use English results outside Canadian immigration. CELPIP's Canadian contexts may be more directly aligned with a Canada-focused plan. Always check the exact test type accepted by the program or institution receiving your result.

Questions learners ask

Short, honest answers

Use these answers to shape a realistic practice plan and understand what NorthPrep can—and cannot—do.

Which test is easier, CELPIP or IELTS?

Neither test is universally less demanding. The practical difference is format: CELPIP is fully computer-based with recorded speaking and selection-based Reading and Listening, while IELTS includes a live Speaking interview and a wider mix of response types. Try official samples and choose the setting that better matches your skills.

Does IRCC prefer CELPIP or IELTS?

IRCC lists both CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training as accepted English tests for Express Entry. It converts each ability to CLB using the official equivalency chart. Check the rules for your specific immigration program before booking. See IRCC's accepted tests and equivalency chart.

Can I use IELTS Academic for Express Entry?

No. IRCC specifies IELTS General Training for Express Entry. IELTS Academic serves different education and professional purposes, so confirm the exact version required by the organization receiving your result.

Can I convert an overall IELTS band to one CLB level?

Do not use the overall band for this conversion. IRCC applies different IELTS thresholds to Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, so enter and check all four skill bands separately.

When might IELTS suit someone better?

IELTS may suit someone who prefers a live Speaking interview, wants a locally available writing or delivery option, or needs a test with broad international or academic recognition. Availability changes by market, so confirm current local options first.
