Speaking Task 5 guide

Comparing and persuading: turn features into reasons that matter

This task moves from evaluating options to persuading a listener. The strongest response chooses clear criteria, explains why the preferred option fits the situation, and handles comparison without reading out a feature list.

01

What you see and what it tests

The practice flow presents options and a situation, followed by preparation and a timed persuasive response. It tests comparison, decision-making, audience awareness, organization, and the ability to support a recommendation with relevant detail.

02

Use recommendation-reasons-comparison

State the preferred option immediately. Develop two or three criteria—such as convenience, suitability, cost, or long-term value—by explaining the benefit to the listener. Compare with the alternative where it strengthens the recommendation, then close with a clear call to choose.

  • Prioritize criteria relevant to the scenario.
  • Do not merely repeat labels from the prompt.
  • Use comparative language precisely.
  • Acknowledge one strength of the other option before showing why yours fits better.

03

Common mistakes and NorthPrep feedback

Learners may describe both options without making a decision, or choose features that do not matter to the listener. NorthPrep's staged Task 5 flow, prompt media, recording, model responses, and AI-assisted feedback help you review persuasion and comparison.

Questions learners ask

Short, honest answers

Use these answers to shape a realistic practice plan and understand what NorthPrep can—and cannot—do.

Must I criticize the other option?

No. A fair comparison is often more persuasive. Explain why your choice fits the listener better without exaggerating weaknesses.

What makes a feature persuasive?

Connect it to a practical benefit or consequence for the specific listener in the prompt.

When should I state my choice?

State it early so every following reason clearly supports the same recommendation.
